Each farmer faces the headache of insect pests at some or the other point of his or her agricultural operation. While commercial farmers employ potent pesticides to destroy them, home gardeners do not take such measures. Though you cannot prevent pest attack completely, you can take timely action to keep them under control. There are manifold ways for insect control, which would be discussed here.

Lots of health hazards and environmental problems are associated with the use of toxic chemical pesticides. Now the shift is to use safer eco-friendly methods for controlling insects. Termites, ants and aphids pose larger threat to the plants since they can attack most parts of the plants. The growth of the plant is targeted by aphids, termites destroy the roots whereas ants are capable of overall destruction to flowers, shoots and roots. The gardener may find diverse problems in gardening due to fleas, mites, cockroaches, flies etc.

At one glance itself, you can identify a garden which is under pest attack. Every gardener knows that insect control is indispensable in gardening. Pests would not allow you to enjoy even a few hours in peace in your beloved garden. Biological control is the best option available to wage a war against such creatures. Green lacewings, ladybugs etc are the primary enemies of aphids while smaller and harmless animals like shrews, toads, hedgehogs etc and predator birds can control growth of larger insects.

There are powerful insect repellent plants like anise, garlic, radish, petunia, nasturtium, marigold etc which can be planted in the garden perimeters. Apart from improving the aesthetic beauty of your garden, these plants help a lot in preventing the multiplication of insect pests in your garden. Thus, insect control is in fact a holistic process comprising of destroying adult insect and putting a check on their reproduction rates.

Many insects can be kept away from your garden by just removing the weeds and not providing ideal conditions for pests to stay on. You need to give emphasis to safe, non-toxic insect control to ensure long life for not only your garden, but for your well-being too. There are hundreds of natural methods to eliminate them. Even a forceful jet of water can dislodge and kill many insects. Solutions made from charcoal, garlic, soap etc are less toxic but highly effective against many pests. But make sure that friendly animals, birds and other creatures are not harmed in your fight against pests.
